Concerns about privacy online in transactions
Hackers are able to track you even if you’re at home alone and using your preferred social media app or browsing the internet. Some may argue that the lack of privacy is part of our digital lives, but that doesn’t mean that we should stop protecting our personal information and rights online. To protect our privacy, we must instead be making informed choices regarding the apps, sites devices, software, and solutions we choose to use. We should also insist on government institutions to protect consumer data.
The current trend of offering users the ability to “opt in” to their personal data being used for marketing purposes causes tension between the desire for communication on the internet with friends and family and the need to safeguard one’s privacy (Woo 2006). In addition, many consumers have no choice but to give their personal information to access websites or services. They also are confronted with a lot of information on what companies do with their information they collect. Many consumers are overwhelmed by the huge amount of information and become less likely to study companies privacy policies on the internet that are becoming more legal in the nature.
While studies have examined the various antecedents to privacy concerns on the internet however, the results are not consistent and have been conducted in a disjointed way. In this study, we propose an integrated model that explains the origins of online privacy concern by examining how different factors interact in the context of a dynamic interaction between a person and a website. The results show that factors that influence the privacy of a person are their concern for privacy as well as their risk-aversion personality as well as the degree of Internet knowledge. The interaction between these elements and the person’s perception of fairness in their privacy online options mitigates the effects.
